Norway Chess Women R6: Vaishali beats Humpy in Armageddon after a one-move rook blunder
GM R Vaishali defeated GM Koneru Humpy in Armageddon after the latter blundered her rook in one move. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) won her match against IM Sara Khadem (ESP). Anna drew her Armageddon with black pieces to win and rejoin the lead with Humpy. Both are now at 9.5/18 each. GM Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) in Armageddon. Tingjie misplayed in the rook endgame which should have ended in a draw with correct play. Wenjun is now at 8.5/18, followed by Vaishali at 8/18. The coleaders Humpy and Anna will clash with each other in Round 7. It starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. Apart from youtube, there is also a live broadcast on Sony Liv. Anna Muzychuk catches up with Koneru Humpy, both are coleaders again
Vaishali - Humpy: 1.5-1
Last year, GM R Vaishali (2481) and GM Koneru Humpy (2543) traded wins in the Classical at the very same event. Vaishali got a substantial advantage in the major piece endgame but it was not easy to figure out how to realize it. She decided to repeat moves and take things to Armageddon.
Armageddon
R Vaishali was in a must-win situation, so she had to take every single opportunity. 17.Rxc6 bxc6 18.Nxe5 Bf6 19.Nxc6 Bxa2 20.Rc5 Be6 and eventually the game liquidated into a double bishop vs rook and bishop endgame where White had to extra pawns. Humpy had a momentary blindspot as she put her rook in the path of Vaishali's bishop. She lost the rook and the game.
Sara - Anna: 1-1.5
IM Sara Khadem (ESP) played a solid draw against GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2535).
Armageddon
Black need not be bothered about the c6-pawn. 51...e4 and rolling the e-pawn down the board should have been an easy win. Instead, 51...Rxc6?! 52.Rxe5 and Rc4 is still winning. However, 52...Kg2?? 53.Rg5+ and the game ended in a draw. Since it was an Armageddon, Anna won the game and match.
Wenjun - Tingjie: 1-1.5
The Classical game between GM Wenjun Ju (CHN, 2580) and GM Tingjie Lei (CHN, 2552) was an uneventful draw.
Armageddon
The above position should end in a draw with correct play. In less time, Tingjie blundered 55...Kh6?? Instead, Re4/2/1/Kf7 would have been fine for Black.
